Depression

Depression affects one in five people at some point in their lives. Anyone can get low at times, but with depression, the feelings don't go away quickly, or become so bad they interfere with everyday life. The symptoms may include feelings of sadness, anxiety, emptiness, hopelessness, worthlessness, guilt, irritability, or restlessness.

Depressed people often lose interest in activities they once found pleasurable, or have difficulty concentrating, remembering details, making decisions, etc. Their weight may change dramatically; they might have trouble sleeping, or sleep excessively, experience fatigue, lack of energy, aches and pains or digestive problems. They may contemplate or attempt suicide.

Sometimes there may be obvious reasons for becoming depressed (a relationship breakdown or bereavement), sometimes not. Often the depressed person will try to struggle on and cope by keeping busy. This can make them even more stressed and exhausted and can cause physical pains, such as constant headaches, or sleeplessness.

Typically in social terms:

  • not doing well at work
  • taking part in fewer social activities and avoiding contact with friends
  • neglecting your hobbies and interests
  • having difficulties in your home and family life
